A new security option using the Website www.pasajeroseguro.com is functioning with a registry of the 12,000 licensed taxis of Quito. On approaching a taxi, you send a text message to the number 2468 with the municipal registry number that is supposed to be visible on the door or windshield and in a few seconds you will have reported and recorded the date and time of pickup, the number of the taxi unit, it’s cooperative or company name and the license plate number of the vehicle. (ed. note – if the taxi is not registered you should try to get out)
‘Safe passenger’ is an initiative of a private company with support of Quito Councillor Macarena Valarezo and was started due to an increase in ‘express’ kidnappings and assaults of which a majority are reported to happen in yellow cabs. The message to 2468 has an approximate cost of 25 cents. You register yourself beforehand on the site to quickly access the system with your details and those of an emergency contact person, so that the message reaches you both.
